- Dr. Ernest Addison, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), and his appointees have been called to resign by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). The NDC has made a call for accountability amid worries about the fiscal performance and management of the central bank.
- On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, charged Dr. Addison with overseeing the Bank of Ghana’s mismanagement, which allegedly resulted in an enormous loss of GH60.8 billion during the 2022 fiscal year, at a press conference held under the NDC’s “Moment of Truth” series.
- In response, the party has threatened to march to the Bank of Ghana’s offices to remove Dr. Addison and his deputies violently if they do not leave freely within the next 21 days. “In this regard, we call for the resignation of the Governor of the Central Bank and his deputies within 21 days from today,” Dr. Forson said.
- “We are determined to launch a public uprising to occupy the Central Bank, throw out the group of criminally negligent, heartless, and incompetent mismanagers of this nation’s money, and save the Bank of Ghana. If the Governor of the Bank of Ghana does not take action and leave the revered institution that he has so trampled in the next 21 days, the March to Guarantee Accountability will start. Ernest Addisson, DO NOT RETURN! Impunity must cease, and the time to do so is now.
- During the news conference, Dr. Forson presented the NDC’s viewpoint, saying, “We are decided to launch popular action to occupy the Central Bank and force out the team of incompetent, heartless, and criminal mismanagers of this country’s economy and save the Bank of Ghana.”
- He emphasized that the party’s demand is a call to halt perceived impunity and financial mismanagement and that the party intends to hold the leadership accountable.
- The Bank of Ghana has allegedly turned into a hub of financial malfeasance, according to the opposition party, which blames its officials for the claimed losses.
