- The Borteyman Sports Complex, which will house several sports at the 13th African Games, has been formally opened by President Akufo-Addo. The African Games will take place in 2024 from March 8–23.
- The Borteyman sports complex features a multipurpose Sports Hall with a 1,000 seat capacity for a variety of events like basketball, badminton, netball, table tennis, and weightlifting, in addition to a 1,000 seat capacity swimming pool with 10 lanes for competition and 8 lanes for warm-up. There’s also a five-tennis court complex, with a 1,000-seat Center Court, and a 500-seat temporary dome for handball, volleyball, judo, karate, taekwondo, fencing, and arm wrestling.
- Speaking at the commissioning ceremony held at the forecourt of the sports complex Tuesday (13 February), President Akufo-Addo said Ghana is ready and capable of hosting Africa for the biggest sporting event on the continent.
“It has been a long journey for us, which has been characterised by uncertainties following the unexpected effect of the COVID 19 pandemic on our infrastructure development plans, and general preparation. However, we demonstrated commitment and resilience.”
- “It is my hope that the facility will be graciously maintained and sustained to continue to keep the international standard for continuous development of our sportsmen and women as well as potential athletes,” stated Mustapha Ussif, Minister of Youth and Sports, in his brief remarks.
- The 13th African Games will include around 3,500 elite athletes and officials from about 49 verified African countries. For the multisport event, more than 3,000 journalists and technical authorities will also be present in Ghana’s capital. Four of the competition’s 23 competitive athletic activities—table tennis, tennis, triathlon, and badminton—will serve as Olympic qualifying events for the Paris, France, 2024 Summer Olympics.
