- On November 10, 2023, the new Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport (AIAAN) in Angola was formally opened. With a capacity of 15 million people yearly, it is intended to function as the primary hub for passenger and freight services in the nation. The airport spans a 50 sq km area and is situated around 40 km east of downtown Luanda.
- The two asphalt runways at AIAAN are located in the north and south, respectively, measuring 13,779 feet (4,200 meters) and 12,467 feet (3,800 meters) long. Each year, the passenger terminal facility can house up to 5 million domestic and 10 million foreign travelers. The airport has a first phase cargo handling capacity of 286.6 million pounds (130,000 tonnes) per year, and it can expand to accommodate up to 970 million pounds (440,000 tonnes) per year.
- Angola’s new airport is strategically significant since it will aid in the growth of the nation’s transportation and tourist industries. Along with facilitating commerce and economic diversification, it will also help the government return its investment through the creation of an airport city and the concession of the airport’s management.
- The former Quatro de Fevereiro Airport (LAD) will gradually be replaced by AIAAN, although LAD will continue to be available for maintenance, training, and non-commercial flight services. It is anticipated that all foreign airlines—including the national carrier—will relocate to the new airport.
