- Both former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden have accepted an invitation from CNN to debate on June 27, a historically early meeting that will determine the course of the campaign in the last several months of 2024.
Biden said in a post on X.
“I’ve received and accepted an invitation from @CNN for a debate on June 27th. Over to you, Donald. As you said: anywhere, any time, any place,”
- Trump later told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, “The answer is yes, I will accept.”
- Later Wednesday morning, both men said they had accepted an invitation from ABC to hold a second debate on September 10.
- The information represents the most recent twist in the rapidly intensifying back-and-forth over the two major rivals’ debates. Earlier, the Biden campaign asked Trump to participate in two presidential debates that would be organized by news organizations. They also formally notified the Commission on Presidential Debates that the president would not be attending the debates that were originally planned for the autumn. The former president informed radio host Hugh Hewitt right away that he was in favor of previous debates and that he would be open to any moderator.
- It was just recently that Biden told radio personality Howard Stern, “I’m happy to debate him,” without committing to any particular structure for the discussion. Biden’s campaign outlined its suggested criteria, including potential debate dates in June and September, in a social media video and a letter to the Commission on Presidential Debates.
