- Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah declared his desire to run for the Bekwai parliamentary seat in the Ashanti Region after leaving the Ghana Police Service.
- On September 18, 2023, after a devoted 31 years of service, Mensah, who has been on leave for the past three months, will formally retire.
- Mensah gained notoriety for his participation in a recording that was released discussing the dismissal of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), whom he regarded as one of the worst IGPs the Police Service had ever had.
- Mensah declared in a radio interview with Accra-based Angel FM that he has made the decision to seek for public service and serve the Bekwai Constituency in Parliament.
- Although he did not say which political party he intended to represent, he acknowledged that he and his family are had long been UP members—the party from which the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) was born.
- Mensah declared that he will never abandon the NPP and that it has always been the object of his affections and relationships.
