- Following a coalition’s attempt to select a different candidate inside a fragmented transitional council, Garry Conille was named as Haiti’s next prime minister.
- This action is taken in response to gangs’ ongoing terrorizing of Port-au-Prince, where they have been known to open fire in previously quiet districts and destroy many police stations and prisons with large machines.
- Earlier on Tuesday, Conille was selected by six of the seven council members who could cast ballots. Prior to taking up her current role as UNICEF’s regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean in January 2023, Conille was prime minister of Haiti from October 2011 to May 2012.
- He takes over for Michel Patrick Boisvert, who was appointed acting prime minister following Ariel Henry’s resignation in late April by letter.
- As Conille assumes leadership of the unstable Caribbean nation as it awaits the arrival of a police force from Kenya and other nations with support from the United Nations, gang violence is still on the rise in some areas of the city and beyond.
- Conille managed relief activities following the catastrophic 2010 earthquake in Haiti while studying medicine and public health. He also contributed to the development of healthcare in underprivileged areas of the country.
- Before Martelly named him prime minister in 2011, he spent several years working at the United Nations.
