- The Ghanaian Police have apprehended 49 individuals suspected of an unlawful assembly and violation of the Public Order Act. The suspects were arrested on Thursday, September 21, in the vicinity of the Jubilee House, the official residence of the Ghanaian government. The arrest follows the disregard of a court order served on the organizers of the Democracy Hub group, which aimed to prevent them from staging a planned demonstration. The Police stated that they do not derive pleasure from barring any group from demonstrating, but the exception is the disagreement with the organizers regarding the venue, given the Jubilee House’s status as a security zone.
- The demonstrators, wearing black and red attire, planned to advocate for reforms such as a reduction in the cost of living, an end to corruption, and enhanced governance. The Police had previously issued a court injunction to halt the protest, but the organizers argued that they had not received any court notice preventing them from proceeding with the protest.
- Organizer Oliver Barker-Vormawor shared a video on social media expressing the group’s disappointment with the Police and appealed to lawyers across the nation to extend legal assistance to the detained protestors. He also called for solidarity from the public and the media.
- The NDC expressed its displeasure at the Police’s deployment of such forceful measures in a press release released by its general secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey.
- The Inspector General of Police’s (IGP) continuous attempts to turn the Ghana Police Service into a preeminent organization are in direct conflict, according to the NDC, with this show of physical force.
- The party expressed sadness that the police will use violence and the restriction of human rights to handle complaints. Other celebrities have expressed their disappointment about the act on social media platforms.
