- The Minority Caucus has been asked to justify to Ghanaians their opposition to the government’s plan to bring the Free Senior High School (SHS) Bill, 2024 in Parliament this year by the Majority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin. Afenyo-Markin said the caucus should explain to Ghanaians if the Free SHS program was not their goal as a responsible opposition.
- Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, the Ranking Member of the Education Committee for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed the party’s strong opposition to the Free SHS policy.
- The Executive has approved the Free SHS Bill, and the Minister of Education will shortly present the legislation to Parliament. In order to move the measure forward, Afenyo-Markin stated that the Majority was prepared to confer with the Minority Caucus, but the latter had not been “ready for the bill.” In light of the government’s intention to propose the law in Parliament this year, he challenged the Minority Caucus to state their stance.
- According to the NDC Minority, the Constitution’s provisions pertaining to free public high school are highly aspirational. The Effutu MP claimed that the Ranking Member on Education evaded a response and was unwilling to commit himself the last time he attempted to broach the subject in public.
