- Bola Tinubu, the president of Nigeria, has commanded an urgent settlement to the disputes with Emirates Airline and the United Arab Emirates’ granting of visas.
- After Dubai’s Emirates discontinued flights owing to an inability to repatriate funds from Africa’s largest economy, the UAE stopped giving visas to Nigerians last year.
- The office of Tinubu met with Salem Saeed Al-Shamsi, the UAE ambassador to Nigeria, and is willing to “personally” interfere in the conflict. “We must collaborate. Core concerns relating to immigration and aviation must be resolved, according to Tinubu.
- Emirates Airline said in March that it is having “substantial” income frozen in Nigeria and that it is making very poor progress at having the money unblocked.
- International carriers operating in Nigeria have had at least $743 million in income withheld from them, according to the international airline industry group IATA.
- Despite some improvements, Nigeria, Africa’s top oil producer, still has a lack of foreign currency, which makes it challenging for certain international airlines that sold tickets in the naira to transfer their money out of the country.
