- An Australian court denied Russia’s request to halt eviction from a Canberra site earmarked for new embassy building.
- On June 15th, the government implemented newly proposed legislation to terminate the Russian lease on the land, which is situated approximately 400 metres (437 yards) from Parliament House. This decision was made after receiving warnings from intelligence agencies that the location posed a significant risk to national security.
- In 2008, it was agreed that Russia would lease land to construct buildings, however, they failed to complete any construction. Recently, in a last-minute attempt, Russia initiated a legal procedure to prevent their eviction.
- Australia’s prime minister told reporters that “The court has made clear that there is no legal basis for a Russian presence to continue on the site at this time,”.
- The present Russian Embassy in the Canberra suburb of Griffith is, in fact, the former Soviet embassy, and it remains fully functional.
