- On bribery-related accusations, Sen. Bob Menendez and his wife Nadine were charged. According to a tweet from the US attorney in New York, they were charged with bribery “in connection with their corrupt relationship with three New Jersey businessmen”.
- Menendez has been accused with crimes relating to corruption twice in the last ten years. “Cash, gold bars, payments toward a home mortgage, compensation for a low- or no-show job, a luxury vehicle, and other items of value” were among the bribes the couple got.
- When federal authorities carried out search warrants in the couple’s Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, residence, they found several of these things.
- More than $480,000 in cash was discovered, “much of it stuffed into envelopes and hidden in clothing, closets, and a safe,” plus more than $70,000 in Nadine Menendez’s safe.
- They also discovered Menendez’s wife receiving a Mercedes-Benz convertible worth more than $60,000 in exchange for the senator’s intervention in a state probe and prosecution.
- The senator’s house also contained gold bars valued hundreds of thousands of dollars. The indictment included charges against all three of the involved businessmen.
