- Poor working conditions have prompted three pre-tertiary education labor organizations to launch an industrial strike: the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT-GH).
- The action was ascribed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Education’s inability to resolve urgent problems that impeded teachers’ capacity to carry out their missions. By February 29, 2024, a Collective Agreement was supposed to be finalized, but the administration had not carried out the necessary negotiations.
- Another reason given for the strike was the GES’s failure to implement a workable Scheme of Service for Teachers that satisfies every need of the teaching profession.
- The unions demanded that the government and GES finish providing laptops to every teacher, refrain from enacting arbitrary changes to the school calendar without first consulting the unions, and undo the Office of Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) suspension of certain teachers’ salaries without following established protocols.
- Citing delays, broken promises from the Employer and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, as well as intimidation from their own membership, the unions announce a statewide strike action to further enforce their demands.
