- As of today, July 15, organized labor has called off its nationwide walkout against Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT)’s sale of a 60% interest in about four hotels. The decision was made following a Monday, July 15, labor union meeting.
- However, the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has been given a month by organized labor to settle any unresolved pension-related issues. Plans to sell off 60% of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT)’s ownership in the four hotels were put on hold last week. The hotels are Elmina Beach Hotel, Royal Ridge Hotel, Labadi Beach Hotel, and La Palm Beach Hotel.
- The labor unions last week said that they would go on strike across the country on Monday, July 15, in protest of the hotels being sold to the Rock City hotel business, which is owned by Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Food and Agriculture. Afterwards, Rock City withdrew its offer for the hotels.
- The Trades Union Congress (TUC) secretary-general, Yaw Baah, said during a press conference in Accra on Monday, July 15, that organized labor received a letter from SSNIT the same day the strike was announced, ending SSNIT’s sale of the hotels.
