- Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One has dominated the box office, taking in a franchise-best $80M domestically and $155M internationally for a strong $235M worldwide debut. The movie’s $290 million budget is comparable to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’s $263 million worldwide during its first three weeks of release. But as is common for the franchise, Dead Reckoning did phenomenally well internationally. Fallout, the most recent entry, finally made $791M after bringing in $571M overseas and $220M domestically. Dead Reckoning, which has not yet debuted in Japan, which contributed $42M to Fallout’s worldwide gross, is now running 15% ahead of that movie domestically. On the down side, Fallout fell $181M in China, where Dead Reckoning is behind by 66% in China, as Fallout ticket sales fell by $181M in 2018.
- Dead Reckoning has a strong A CinemaScore, but even if it’s not the huge smash many (including me) were anticipating, it should be alright in the long term. Sound of Freedom, produced by Angel Studios, saw a 37% boost in sales over its second weekend, earning a fantastic $27M to bring its domestic total to $85M. Despite seeing the anticipated 60% horror decline in its second frame, Insidious: The Red Door nevertheless made $58M domestically, more than four times its production budget.
- A strong, cheerful comedy that sticks out among the dated Transformers and Indiana Jones offerings, Barbie could be the summer’s biggest smash. With its problematic 3-hour duration and R-rating, Oppenheimer is the wild card in this situation. The movie has to receive excellent reviews and word-of-mouth to dominate the competition.
