- The case that the UK’s Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) has upheld against Jeremy Clarkson’s December 2022 column in The Sun is the subject of Meghan’s sexism complaint.
- The column, which was eventually taken down and apologized for, stated that Meghan should be “paraded through English streets naked while being pelted with excrement” and made a “pejorative and prejudicial reference to her sex”.
- This decision set a precedent because it was the first time that IPSO has upheld a sexism complaint. The Fawcett Society and the WILDE Foundation, two organizations that support women’s rights, complained, saying that the editorial was “vile and offensive” and that “media misogyny is not acceptable”. An all-time high of over 25,000 complaints were made to IPSO regarding the work.
- The Sun will now be required to tease the story on its front page and publish the findings of the IPSO investigation on Saturday on the same page where Clarkson’s column would have appeared. Additionally, a web version has been instructed. But some have criticized the sentence as being too light and questioned why it took the IPSO so long to render a decision.
